How To Decorate Your Boat’s Interior

Dec. 3 2019 Miscellaneous By ___

As a new boat owner, you’re proud of your boat. That’s a given. But maybe you’ve found that it doesn’t feel very much like yours inside, because the standard-issue materials it was constructed with are somewhat sterile and impersonal. Never fear! You can easily transform your boat’s interior into a cozy and welcoming environment that reminds you of home and is infused with your own tastes and personality.

New Jersey Outboards, here in Bayville, is proud to be your Garden State boat dealer. To help you in your quest to customize your craft, we’ve gathered up some suggestions for decorating your boat’s interior. Read on to learn more!

Add Mood Lighting

Your boat’s interior lighting may not be very inspiring or cozy, but you can switch it up! LED lights are a good option because they’re low-power and long-lasting and bright. You could get rope or string lights to tack up around the perimeter of the ceiling for a whimsical touch (this is especially good for holidays, but it’s a kitschy aesthetic that also works all year round!) or you could get smaller lamps that are battery-powered. LED candles are a safer choice than real flame candles and they can make a dinner on your boat more romantic!

Get Blankets & Throw Pillows

Your boat’s furniture is designed to be easy to clean and water-resistant, so it may not be the coziest thing ever. However, you can change that by adding some softness in the form of a few blankets or afghans and throw pillows. Wool and fleece are both water-resistant and very warm and insulating options for blankets, but you could also bring on an old quilt or handmade afghan made by a relative.

Coordinate with throw pillows in matching colors or patterns. Fun nautical themes like blue and white stripes, anchors, lighthouses, mermaids and fish are all great choices, but you could simply go with colors you like or a plaid instead. Either way, throw pillows and blankets will add some softness to your boat’s interior and make it more welcoming to your passengers.

Make Smart Choices

Obviously, not all forms of decor are going to work well on a boat. You’ve got humidity and choppy waves to deal with, after all, so anything that can get wet or break is a bad move.

Paper decorations are good for a temporary celebration, but are likely to get waterlogged if on your boat for too long.

Glass is liable to fall and break if not sturdily secured to the wall or a shelf, so plastics, fabric and wood are much safer bets. If you want to use ornaments or baubles of some kind, try to find shatter-proof versions so that the plastics won’t splinter. Lighter weight decorations are also much better than heavy and cumbersome items that could fall and injure someone. You’ll want to decorate in such a way that nothing is in the way of people walking or moving around the boat safely.

Make sure to mount frames and wall decor so that it won’t fall if the water is choppy. You also don’t want to have any fire hazards on board and you should have a fire extinguisher handy in case a fire does break out.
