Yamaha Outboard Motors For Sale in Bayville, NJ
The Right Outboards For Your Boat
Outboard motors are a great way to add power to your boat after you’ve purchased it. There are plenty of different outboard styles available on the market and it can be hard to determine which one will best meet your needs. Here at New Jersey Outboards of Bayville, New Jersey, we are well-versed in what style of outboard motor you should use for your specific type of boat. If you’re not sure what outboard motor you should outfit your boat with, read on to find our breakdown on outboard styles and usage.
What Kind Of Boat Do You Have?
The type of boat you have will mainly affect the size of outboard motor you need. For a small jon boat, dinghy or canoe, you may only need a small portable outboard motor of about 15 horsepower that doesn’t generate an excess of power. Small outboards like this can also add power to a sailboat for times when the wind is calm. A portable outboard or an electric outboard will provide sufficient, quiet power for trolling, even on a bigger boat. In general, larger crafts like pontoon boats and center console boats will need a much bigger outboard with more power, up to 100 horsepower in some cases. More powerful outboards than this are usually linked to controls at the helm of the boat.
Is It Necessary To Use Two Motors?
Whether you use one or two outboards depends on how much power each outboard provides. If you have two 150 horsepower motors and want to get up to 300 horsepower, you can clamp them both on, but it makes much more sense economically to get one 300 horsepower outboard to power your boat. However, if you have a very small motor and want to add another one for increased power and control, that would make more sense. Only use two motors if you can’t get the same power from one motor, or if you want the protection of a backup in case one motor breaks down. This means you’ll need to have separate fuel or power sources for each motor, though.
The Need For Speed
When it comes to speed, higher horsepower outboards will give you more knots. Higher performance engines can also provide more speed, but require more expensive high-octane fuel, so that’s something to keep in mind if you want to keep costs down. There’s very little difference between modern two-stroke and four-stroke engines at this point; two-strokes are a little louder and lighter in weight than four-strokes. Both provide fairly equal amounts of power.
