The Triton Series
The Triton Series exemplifies what Sea Hunt Boat Company was founded on, the principle that people desire an affordable boat with excellent performance, a layout with lots of room and great fishing features. Each Triton comes with large fish boxes, aerated livewells and lockable console storage space. What separates the Triton series from the rest of the pack is the performance. With a sharp entry deadrise and dry Carolina Flair, comfort does not have to come at a price; it comes standard in the Triton Series.

Summer Thunder Storms

Beyond a certain age, nothing stops fun on the water better than unexpected soakings, suddenly violent waves, or any activity that can lead to a serious risk of falling out of the boat. And few events can end a good time on the water as precipitously as being hit by lightning.

These are all summertime risks, but they can vary greatly in degree of probability depending on your knowledge of – and respect for – the weather.

There may have been a time, way back before Odysseus, when ignorance of the elements was an excuse for mishap or disaster. But incredible modern-day refinements in satellite-based forecasting and communications technology have removed the last traces of an alibi for being caught on the water unawares. These days, if you didn’t know what to expect it was because you didn’t ask – or you just didn’t take the time to learn.

Ask where? Learn what?

The Weather Channel is a good place to start. Along with its local forecasts, it provides good radar tracking, notification of small craft advisories, and other pertinent information that boater’s can use. In most coastal areas, VHF broadcasts provide accurate, timely, local marine data on wind direction and speed, temperature, wave height, tides, and special advisories of both long-term and sudden changes. In the summertime, this service includes notification of current thunderstorm activity along with estimates of its future probability. In addition, with direct downloads from weather-mapping satellites, along with your VHF radio, CBs, ship-to-shore, portable AM-FM radios and cellular telephones, you’re only a moment away from everything you should ever need to know.

And that’s not all. For the technology-deficient, toy-deprived or electronically unprepared, there is another reliable resource in the form of accumulated lore and common sense. Since thunderstorms usually travel from west to east, boaters should keep an eye on the western sky. Calm usually does precede a storm, so can a mackerel sky. And yes, red skies at morning are a sailor’s warning.

If you don’t have a phone, can’t hear the crackling on the AM radio and there is haze in the path of the roiling clouds, one of the best indicators of increased electrical activity in the area is still the hair on your forearms or on the back of your neck: when it starts to rise, it’s well past time to get moving.

You say you shave your arms and there isn’t enough hair left on your head to throw a shadow? Well, when caught in foul weather, you should immediately put on your life jacket, reduce the speed of the boat and head for the nearest lee shore or safe harbor. Point the bow at a slight angle into the waves, keeping your passengers low and near the midship point to reduce the risk of battering from the seesaw motion of the boat.

If the engine fails, anchor by the bow or, in deep water, deploy a sea anchor (anything that will slow your drift with underwater drag, such as a bucket or an empty bait box) from the stern.

Prayer is permitted. Learn from the experience.

Hurricane SunDeck 2400 OB (2010-) Captain’s Report

Can’t decide what kind of boating you’re going to do today? If it’s cruising, fishing, skiing, or wakeboarding, then the Hurricane SunDeck 2400 OB has got you covered.

Let the Good Times Roll

The simple fact is, boaters love deckboats, and with good reason. Not too many bowriders can give you the same space in the same length of boat. And to top it off, they add the creature comforts to seal the deal. Starting in the stern of the 2400 OB, one thing is hard to miss, and that’s the absence of an engine box. By mating an outboard to the SunDeck 2400, Hurricane has added to the already voluminous space onboard. With a 300 horsepower max rating even your largest friends will enjoy being towed behind this boat.

Plenty of seating in this open layout. Notice the dual in-deck storage compartments. We count 15 drink holders.

The refreshment center will serve nicely to keep thirst down and temperatures at bay with storage for a 25 qt (23.6 L) cooler below, an insulated compartment up top as well as a sink with pressurized water. Next to the cooler below, is a trash receptacle for easy cleanup. When it’s time for a snack, the standard pedestal table will make meals a breeze. One item on the options list that we feel is a must have, would be the stainless gas grill. Few things are more rewarding than a BBQ on the water.

Seating

L-shaped seating in the cockpit is mated nicely with dual bucket seats for the driver and observer. Swinging the observer’s seat around creates an instant lounger for watching whoever might be at the end of the towline, or just catching rays. Roomy lounge seats in the bow will create a relaxing atmosphere while still maintaining the roominess that sundecks are famous for, and if you don’t want to move the aft table to the bow, you can opt for a second pedestal table. There is storage underneath all bench seats, and they are all ventilated to keep your stuff dry and mildew free.

Go Ahead, Jump In

Reboarding is easy with swim ladders both fore and aft. Both are three step, and we like to see four steps to make it just a bit easier to climb aboard. Both retract and lie flush and covered on the deck. The stern is naturally fitted with a half swim platform due to the outboard, but that’s a fair tradeoff to having more room in the cockpit.

The swim ladder on the stern and beach ladder on the bow make re-boarding a simple matter. They are both 3-step, we’d like to see four steps on the stern.

Going Fishing?

If fishing is in your game plan for the boat, Hurricane has you covered there as well. While all items are optional, you have your choice of three fish finders (one includes GPS), two different fish chairs for the bow deck, a livewell with re-circulating pump, rod storage clips for keeping the rods under the gunwale, and finally an electric trolling motor.

Helm

The helm is neat and orderly, with all rocker switches off to port, gauges above include speedometer; fuel; voltmeter; tachometer; hour meter. Oil pressure and engine temperature will be relegated to alarms on the engine. We love the three stainless steel drink holders, since one inevitably gets used for holding the cell phone or sunglasses. Now you can actually hold stuff and even have a spot for your drink, too. With Yamaha’s engine attached, the engine control is fly-by-wire for ultra-smooth operation.

This panel includes an optional fishfinder/GPS. Notice how all the rocker switches are grouped together, and the horn button is instantly recognizable. Three drink holders allow you to have a place for your sunglasses or cell phone while still leaving space for a drink.

Other “Must Have” Options

So is there anything else that we simply couldn’t live without? Sure… to start with, a digital in-dash depth gauge. That’s a necessity on any boat. If you plan on using your SunDeck 2400 to maximize your water sports activities, then the wakeboard tower with racks will be next on the list. If tunes will make or break your day then you have upgrade choices available for that too. You may want to consider the Thunder and Lightning option which includes a Sony receiver, Polk Audio speakers and sub-woofer, and an 1800W MTX amplifier. And there’s always the optional transom remote and IPod docking station. If you have a lot of lady friends, then you may want to consider either a Porta-Potti or Vacu-Flush head as well.

The “changing room” is standard, but you may want to consider the optional Porta-Potti or Vacu-Flush head to go along with it.

So What Else is Standard

A lot actually. This boat comes with essentials such as dock lights, bimini top, all stainless steel hardware, a sink in the head compartment, fresh water washdowns in both bow and stern, a Sony stereo with MP3 input, and courtesy deck lighting. Inarguably a good list that includes items that we’ve seen on several options lists.

If you can picture in your head all the things you’d like to be doing on the water, chances are, most all of them can be accomplished in the Hurricane SunDeck 2400 OB.

The Jenny Lee from Manasquan ran a crew trip to Hudson Canyon Saturday, and trolled two 45-pound yellowfin tuna plus four dolphin up to 30 pounds. Erik Villalobos(11) of Brick got into his first canyon action, including a shot at a blue marlin that was raised, but didn’t hit.

Capt. Lindsey Fuller of June Bug from Beach Haven took a party including artificial reef developer Bill Figley to Lindenkohl Canyon where they trolled a 160-pound bigeye tuna before catching small yellowfins, and then some larger ones.

Nick Honachefsky of Normandy Beach joined Dave Migliore on Blackbeards Revenge to fish Chicken Canyon — where only bluefish were found. They moved into the Glory Hole and watched 150-to-200-pound tuna crashing, but weren’t able to troll them.

Much further inshore, I joined Dave Lilly of Hazlet today for some deepwater fluking in Ambrose Channel from his center console out of Anglers Marine in Sea Bright. Lilly had enjoyed a decent bite of keepers the two previous days, but Anthony Altobelli of The Tackle Box in Hazlet and I couldn’t provide much help today. It was just a slow pick in a strong current, though we ended up with enough fillets from fluke up to 4 pounds – but not the doormat that Lilly was looking for.

Jack Gilligan of Sea Gills from Snipe Boat Club in Carlstadt did find the fluke he was looking for Monday as he drifted off Hoffman’s Island. He boated an 8.3-pounder, only to be upstaged by his cousin Larry who hooked a 10.3-pound doormat. They also caught a 5-pounder and over 60 shorts, though many of them were over 18 inches – not big enough in N.Y. waters where the minimum is 21 inches.

The Sea Devil from Point Pleasant had slower bluefishing Monday, but choppers up to 13 pounds were boated.

Capt. John Koegler of the Starfish from Beach Haven had good fishing for sea bass at Little Egg Inlet on Monday, when he was shocked to see a 21 1/2-inch cod caught.

The Sea Hunt Story

Sea Hunt started in 1995 by a father and son combining generations of experience and a deep seeded passion to bring innovation, performance and value to the marine industry. Vic Roof Sr. began in the marine industry in the 1960’s with his brother Alvin and went on to create one of the largest boat companies of the 80’s, Sunbird Boat Company. Sunbird was eventually purchased by Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC). Due to his experience and success, OMC retained Vic for several years to run the company. After the completion of his contract Vic took a short break from manufacturing. When his son Vic Roof Jr. (Bubba) graduated college they joined their interest in the marine industry, expertise for design and manufacturing and passion for fishing and created Sea Hunt Boat Company.

All boat companies target specific segments of the marine industry. What Sea Hunt does better than all the rest is deliver the most boat for the money. Simply stated Sea Hunt is the best VALUE in the marine industry. Sea Hunt defines value and creates this advantage many different ways. When you combine materials, craftsmanship and construction, design, styling, performance and ease of maintenance, Sea Hunt can not be beat. This process begins with how the company is operated. By operating debt free and having superior financial strength, Sea Hunt can take advantage of cash discounts on raw materials. Our experienced work force, many of whom worked for Vic at Sunbird, allow us to create new models and build boats with far fewer people, further reducing overhead.

MATERIALS

You can rest assured that Sea Hunt uses only the finest components available to the marine industry. Sea Hunt is part of the largest independent marine buying group, Independent Boat Builders Inc. (IBBI). Being a member allows Sea Hunt to procure the best materials available at the best prices. IBBI purchasing group has members such as Bertram, Contender, Scout, Regulator, and Cruisers Yachts. From gelcoat, fiberglass, resin, and composite coring material, to pumps and hardware all components have passed tests and standards to be on a short list of the best available to the marine industry.

CRAFTSMANSHIP AND CONSTRUCTION

Sea Hunts are crafted using composite materials. Sea Hunt uses Nida-Core polypropylene honeycomb material in the floors and other load bearing areas and Nyloboard recycled fiber blocks in areas requiring extra strength and support at critical points. Transoms are Coosa Composite Blue Water Series high density fiberglass reinforced polyurethane boards that are CNC cut specifically for each boat. The ability to assemble these materials in the most efficient manor is one more way Sea Hunt separates itself from the industry. Each step of the process these boats are assembled by craftsmen with many years of experience and supervised by the owners. Sea Hunts are NMMA certified following the ABYC and ISO standards providing one more stamp of assurance that these boats are the finest available.

DESIGN, PERFORMANCE, AND MAINTENANCE

All Sea Hunts started on a drafting board with specific ideas in mind, then hand built into a wood “plug”. Using the wood plug a fiberglass mold is made and from the mold, a Sea Hunt Boat. The design team has remained the same from the first boat. Vic Roof Sr., Bubba Roof, and Doug Collier Design are all responsible for the innovative designs. Doug Collier is a 5th generation boat designer whose ancestors started in boat design when his great, great grandfather built the Robert E Lee Schooner. Boat design remained in the Colliers blood through the subsequent generations. Doug cut his boat design teeth running around the Grady White plant during the ‘70’s when his father worked for Grady. Early on in his own career, Doug was successful designing boats with Vic and Sunbird. When Sea Hunt was born the team only got stronger adding a true fishing perspective to the design team, Bubba Roof.

Sea Hunt Boats are designed to combine classic looks and modern practicality, with emphasis on building a safe, outstanding performing boat with more space and better ride than the competition. Our goal is to have Sea Hunts perform with less horsepower, ride like bigger boats, and feel like the interiors have more room than our competitor’s larger boat. Viewing the profile of a Sea Hunt, it is evident; the bows drop down sharply, allowing the largest degree of deadrise to enter the water creating a soft ride. Incorporating a reverse chine on the bottom and Carolina Flair on the bow virtually eliminates spray. If spray does make it past the chine, the flair comes all the way back past the console and leaning post keeping the spray out of the cockpit. If you view a Sea Hunt from the rear looking to the front down the gunwale you can see these boats are wider all the way back to the shear line break. Additionally, looking at the transom you can see the boats are wider from chine to chine eliminating any rock and roll creating stability. Compared to some of the competition, Sea Hunts transom deadrise is lower than some. Lower transom deadrise and longer running surfaces allow these boats to perform with smaller horsepower and burn less fuel. (For example there are not many 22 footers that will run with 150 horsepower or many 20 footers that will run with 115 horsepower).

While some other boat companies add flashy accessories to their boats, Sea Hunt believes flash creates problems and adds maintenance. There is no teak to oil or very little chrome to polish. We want to create a boat with as little maintenance as possible. Sea Hunt wants to reduce the amount of time the consumer spends taking care of their boat allowing more time to enjoy it.

Sea Hunt is an exclusive partner with Yamaha and has the most complete fishing boat line from 17 to 29 feet. By combining the same materials of much more expensive boats, designing boats that will perform with smaller horsepower, and having interior designs creating more room and ease of maintenance it is easy to see why these boats are the BEST VALUE in the industry. All this has made Sea Hunt the number 1 selling boat in America.

http://www.powercatgroup.com/experts-say

Over the years, a number of distortions, half-truths, and just plain lies have been told about power catamarans. In this section, we bust a few of these “cat myths” and show you the truth about the incredible boating experience only power catamarans can offer.

Cat Myth 1

Cats don’t track well in a following sea.

A lot of boaters worry that driving a cat boat isn’t relaxing, because they think they’ll have to constantly watch the sea and where they’re going. This just isn’t true. A catamaran is much better than a monohull in a following sea, as a mono will plow into the front wave as they come down, then turn or pitch-pull when they plow into this next wave. But cats are more bouyant in the bow, almost removing this worry.

Trim properly and a following sea is no problem Not all cats sneeze | Cats best boat in a head sea | Cat boats are weak and can break in half???? | Trailering a cat is easy | Tiger by the Tail |

Cat Myth 2

Power catamarans don’t look like a traditional boat.

Every boater is aware that Australians and New Zealanders know their boats. And catamarans aren’t ugly to them: despite a much smaller population, there are four times more power catamarans in Australia and New Zealand than there are here. They know that the smoothness of the ride, especially in their infamously rough water, is superior to any monohull’s.

Cat Myth 3

Cats are awkward to drive and hard to get used to.

Some customers believe that it’s too difficult to learn how to drive a power catamaran, and they worry that they’ll never get used to the awkwardness. But cats are incredibly simple to operate: once you learn the basics of keeping a proper trim you’ll be 90% of the way to being an expert. Experienced boaters will tell you that learning to drive a catamaran was easy…and they’ll never go back to a monohull.

Cat Handling Analysis | Is it Tough to Drive a Cat?

Cat Myth 4

Cats always turn outboard and can throw you from the boat.

One of the worst lies that monohull dealers tell consumers interested in a power catamaran is that they will get thrown from the boat, especially if they need to turn sharply at high speeds. While it’s true that at slow speeds and slow turns, our boats do tend to lean slightly outboard, the effect is so minor no one’s in any danger of ending up in the water. At high speeds, however, power catamarans bank inboard, just like a monohull.

Cats lean inboard like a mono at high speeds | Cats lean inboard…running photage

Cat Myth 5

Cats have trouble drifting in beam seas and can tip.

Many boaters believe that because catamarans have two hulls close together, the boats have a violent rock when drifting, and are even in danger of tipping. In fact, it’s just the opposite: the twin-hull design allows for a smoother drift in beam seas, one that settles much faster than a monohull. As for tipping, the PowerCat Group associates with dozens, if not hundreds, of lifelong boaters, and none of us have ever heard of a single catamaran tipping over.

Adrift in a Beam Sea

Cat Myth 6

Cats can’t handle rough seas.

Some customers have the impression that cats are fine in three to five feet seas, but only monohulls can handle seas over six feet. Monohull dealers don’t clear up this myth, of course, and say that cats are great in a bay but not in rough seas. We’re not sure where this myth got started–maybe from racing cats, an entirely different craft–but it’s just flat out wrong: catamarans are superior in every way in rough seas. For milenia, fishermen have trusted the twin hull design to get them through big seas.

Mono-hulls can’t compete in big seas

Cat Myth 7

Experienced boaters prefer monohulls.

Customers are often told that when it comes to experienced boaters, they prefer monohulls over catamarans. Some dealers even hint that buying a catamaran is buying a dying breed of boat. But the truth is that boaters with experience with both kinds of crafts almost always prefer cats. In Australia, a country that knows its boats, catamarans are a whopping 45% of the market. The PowerCat Group’s customer base is made up of experienced boaters who understand the advantages of a catamaran: 76% of them have owned three or more boats, and they choose a power catamaran.

Cat Myth 8

The build quality of cats are bad and the companies are poorly managed.

Power catamarans are a niche product in the US, and some consumers have negative feelings about niches, thinking that niche products can’t be as high-quality as mainstream ones. But the PowerCat Group was specifically founded to create a modern boat company that deliberately went against boating industry practices like inbreeding and fear of change. We utilize innovative and cutting-edge materials, processes, designs, and management techniques to build the highest quality boats on the water. PowerCat Group is expertly managed by experienced executives, and has grown even in tough markets.

Cat Myth 9

Cats angle or pitch for no reason.

Boaters are often told that the main weakness of the twin hull design is that the two hulls fight each other for dominance, each one pulling in opposite directions. In fact, some dealers claim that you can’t even hold a cup on a catamaran because you’re so busy fighting the wheel. The truth is nowhere close. Though catamarans are different boats from monohulls, with a unique handling all their own, learning to drive a catamaran is much easier than driving a conventional boat.

Cat Myth 10

Cats can flip in rough seas.

Most people’s first experience with power catamarans is watching the exciting racing catamarans on TV…and watching the dramatic crashes. But a racing catamaran is as different from our cats as an Indycar is from a luxury sedan. Simply put: power catamarans don’t flip over in rough seas or anywhere else. One of our expert bloggers, Dean Travis Clark, recently took a 26′ cat from the Midway Islands to Hawaii, a trip that regularly featured eighteen foot seas. Try riding one of those in a 26′ monohull!

Not all cats sneeze

Cat Myth 11

Cats are bad in a head sea.

Customers are often told that catamarans have a history of bad performance in a head sea, making the ride uncomfortable or even dangerous. But in fact, thanks to the twin-hull design, catamarans actually perform better in head seas, compared to monohulls. The secret is how the unique hull design handles displacement.

Cats best boat in a head sea

Cat Myth 12

There’s no resale value and no market for traded cat boats

Another topic monohull dealers mislead potential customers on is resell value for catamarans. They claim that if customers buy a cat they’ll be losing too much money, because they’ll never be able to sell it. And it’s true, you rarely see a used power catamaran…but only because owners love their boats so much they never want to sell them! Of all the power catamarans sold in the last 10 years, only 4% are available for resale. With so few used boats on the market, the resale value of these boats is actually quite high.

Cat Myth 13

Cats are hard to trailer.

Because of the unique twin-hull design of the power catamaran, boaters often wonder how easy it is to trailer them. Aren’t they difficult to load on a trailer? Can’t they be a complicated to drive down the road? As with so many of the previous myths, the truth to this one is the exact opposite: the twin hulls actually make the boats easier to trailer and easier to transport. Every catamaran trailer has a tracking pad that guides the hulls as you load or unload the boat. The unique design of the power catamaran creates less air resistance when on the move, meaning the boat is not only more fuel efficient on the water…it’s more fuel-efficient on land, too!

Cat Myth 14

Cat boats are weak and can break in half.

Of all the myths you hear about cat boats, this one is the most outrageous. There are rumors that, because of the twin hull design, cat boats are weak and prone to breaking in half. This simply isn’t true…no one we’ve worked with or talked to has ever heard of a cat boat breaking in half. At the PowerCat Group, we’ve done every test we could think of to disprove this. We’ve put poles down the center with weights on each side, we’ve put a cat boat on blocks with weights in the center…we’ve even dropped a boat from fifty feet! And each test had the same result: none of the boats came anywhere close to breaking.
