With boating season finally on its way, you’re likely looking forward to hitting the water ASAP with all of your friends and family in tow. However, before you load your boat onto your trailer and take off, we want to encourage you to quickly read through our article below. In it, we’ve listed a few important pieces of safety equipment you’ll need on hand, to ensure the safety of you, your passengers, and your boat this season.

PFDs

Your most important piece of safety equipment is always going to be your personal flotation device! Depending on the type of PFD you buy, these amazing devices can keep you afloat even when you’re unconscious, protect you from cold water, and flip you over to face the surface if you become disoriented. When purchasing your PFD, we advise grabbing a few extra models for any passengers you want to invite aboard, as well as a throwable PFD in case someone falls overboard without their device.

Signals

In most states across the U.S., boats are required to have a number of distress signals onboard to alert nearby boaters and authorities they’re in need of help. Visual signals will need to be visible at night, and boats over 16 feet in length will also be required to have a visual signal that functions in the daytime. Regardless of your boat’s size, you’ll need to purchase at least two sound signals, such as an athletic whistle, air horns, or even a bull horn.
