Boats and kids are a great combination! Children love zipping across the water, either sitting in the boat or being pulled behind it on an inner tube. They'll be making memories they will cherish for their whole life. But before you bring your kiddos on board, make sure the voyage will be a safe one. We gathered up the top tips for taking kids on boats below. For all your boating needs, visit New Jersey Outboards. We proudly serve those in Pennsylvania.

Set Clear Rules

Before kids can hop aboard boats, they need to briefed about basic boating safety. Kids tend to be unaware of safety threats and need to be taught the rules of safe travel.

Rule one is to stay seated at all times. It's tempting for kids to want to lean over and peer at the water below. But this can lead to hurt arms or even falling overboard. Rule two is to put on a life jacket before getting on board. This is in case someone falls in trying to get into the boat. They will already have the flotation assistance they need. Rule three is everyone should walk inside the boat because it's all too easy to slip and fall. You can add more rules, but these are the bare bone requirements.

Of course, simply telling kids rules is one thing. Getting them to follow the rules is another. One strategy is to clearly explain the "why" behind the rule. It can help kids remember (and make them more willing to follow it). Another tactic is to explain the rules in the home when you have their full attention (rather than on the new environment of the boat on the way to ice cream). You will also want to review the rules before each voyage until they fully stick.

Pack the Supplies

Boats require a certain amount of gear to enjoy safely. Of course, everyone needs a life jacket. There are a few traits to look for with kid's life vests. Head flotation keeps their head easily above the water's surface. A crotch strap keeps them from falling out of the jacket. Self-righting features keep them swimming in the right direction. Always test the fit of a life jacket first before okaying it for the boating excursion.

You can make yourself a "kids boating kit" full of supplies to make the trip go smoother. Bring a cooler stocked with snacks (hungry kids become grumpy kids fast). Tackle seasickness with Dramamine, 7-Up, or saltine crackers. Sunscreen is imperative for keeping sunburns away. Bug repellent is good too (you'll be surprised how many bugs try to join your party, especially if there is food on board).

Make the Trip Fun

While adults may find lounging on a boat inherently enjoyable, kids have a different perspective. They want active entertainment! You'll need to engage them to keep them having a good time. Depending on the age of your kids, you can do different activities. They can do board games, art projects, I Spy, charades, and so on. Let your kids help build the trip playlist or give them tasks (such as removing bumpers) to help them feel even more engaged. With a little intentionality, you can make it a great trip for everyone.
